Bicycle rental is an important part of the micromobility system, providing a convenient, affordable and environmentally friendly way to travel around the city. Optimising the placement of stations reduces traffic congestion and promotes sustainable urban development, while also encouraging the use of bicycles.
We developed schemes for the placement of over 600 new bike-sharing stations, with a focus on popular attractions and areas with high levels of pedestrian and cyclist traffic. These designs took into account the specifics of the urban environment, the local context, and the popularity of routes.
Until 2023, Moscow's bike-sharing operator, Velobike, used a station-based model, with fixed stations located in areas of high demand. Our team determined the exact positioning and configuration of the stations, taking into account the specific characteristics of each location.
To achieve this, we conducted a comprehensive analysis, studying factors such as the attractiveness of locations for users, pedestrian traffic, and servicing area regulations. This allowed us to position the stations so that they did not obstruct pedestrian traffic or the operation of public services.
As a result, more than 600 bike-sharing stations were installed in Moscow and integrated into the urban environment.
Since 2023, the model has changed, with electric bicycles that do not require fixed stations appearing in the city.
