The mountain tourist cluster — the Medeu skating rink and the Shymbulak ski resort — is a unique tourist magnet not only for Almaty and Kazakhstan, but for the whole of Central Asia. Every year the flow of visitors and tourists grows, and the existing roads can no longer cope with the load. The future development of the territory's tourist cluster required the development of a transport service strategy.
The mountain corridor is already experiencing traffic difficulties, especially during the ski season and major events. We have developed a strategy for transport services for the entire corridor, starting from the city centre, taking into account the future development of the area.
Systematised plans for the development of territories and forecasted the growth of traffic for the next 7 years. Based on the results of the analysis, we identified the year when transport demand will exceed supply in order to effectively plan and implement the necessary measures in a timely manner.
Developed a phased proposal to introduce dedicated lanes and optimise traffic flow at junctions.
Defined parameters for strengthening existing bus routes and proposed organisation of new modes of public transport.
Redistributed parking spaces in the corridor and created a network of transport and interchange hubs with parking and smart pricing.
Analysed the extension of the current cable car.
A detailed roadmap of the project implementation with estimated effects and costs was drawn up.
Infrastructure development focused solely on private transport is not able to cope with the ever-increasing traffic flow. Therefore, we have developed a balanced development strategy focused on public transport, which will significantly optimise traffic routes and reduce travel times.
The creation of dedicated lanes, increased bus frequency, modernisation of rolling stock and improved bus stop facilities will help to meet the growing demand for public transport. At the same time, increasing the capacity of intersections and regulating the cost of parking will improve conditions for private transport, ensuring a more efficient and balanced use of urban infrastructure.
The creation of a cascade of interceptor car parks and the introduction of zone-based tariff pricing is significant. Combined with the development of public transport routes, this will help meet the demand to visit the cluster by 2028, ensuring efficient distribution of traffic flows and encouraging the use of public transport.
